Project 4: Pop-up Paper Toy

Project 4: Paper Craft Figure

Illustrator Project-2: Reductive Portrait

OVERVIEW

Our second Adobe Illustrator project explores 3-D objects created in a 2-D flat atmosphere. To do so we will be planning, illustrating, and constructing original paper-craft characters. With the final product of these 3-D paper toys, you will have built skills and knowledge in the variety of ways vector tools can be used for illustration and crafting of templates. In addition you will have a better sense of how and when to appropriately use various tricks of Illustrator.

Create an original character (or set of characters) based on any of the sampled and linked template files. Your character must also have 2-3 additional props to further the personality of your character.

RULES

1. Develop an original character! THis means it doesn’t already exist through some other IP. It may still be related, but shouldn’t be another companion cube paper craft.

This also means (ie:required) sketching before diving into the computer and Illustrator. Your character MUST also include two secondary character support objects or props.

2. Present a series of drawn sketches that explain your process and artwork application. Present how your character works of the various planes (front, top, back, rear).

3. Create a new, or modify existing template(s) to suit your character. There are plenty of existing blank templates to skin new characters over. That being too simple, you will need to modify or add a template to make your character unique. Alternatively, you can create your own template.

4. Other than templates, you MAY NOT USE any existing character references or graphics, each piece must be unique to your own design.

5. You must use Illustrator to create your own template.
